Technical Visit to the IAN-R1 Nuclear Reactor

Resumen del Evento (Event Overview)
On August 1st, 2025, the IEEE PES Chapter carried out a technical visit to the IAN-R1 nuclear reactor, located at the CAN headquarters of the Colombian Geological Service in Bogotá. During the session, participants attended an introductory talk covering the principles of nuclear energy, the history and evolution of the IAN-R1 reactor in Colombia, and its applications in scientific research.
Exhibición Interactiva y Ejes Estratégicos
Reactor Operation, Nuclear Safety & Radiological Protocols Following the presentation, attendees took part in an extensive guided tour of the facility, where they learned directly from facility engineers about: • Reactor operation dynamics, core monitoring, and neutron flux applications. • Advanced multi-redundant safety and shutdown systems. • Nuclear fuel cycle and radioactive material handling. • Strict radiological safety, dosimetric monitoring, and radiation protection protocols.
Taller Práctico, Soldadura y Concurso de Ensamble PCB
Connecting Theory with High-Impact Real-World Technology The visit allowed students to connect theoretical knowledge with real-world applications, clarify technical doubts about nuclear energy, and expand their understanding of the technological potential within the nuclear power and scientific research sector. This was a valuable opportunity to reinforce the chapter's commitment to advanced technical education and strengthen relationships with leading research institutions in Colombia.
